Strandr Alternative: GlowBid vs Strandr for Installers

Strandr costs $197 a year and does one job well: it puts lights on a photo of a house in about two minutes. It does not measure the house (that is Inchr, a separate free tool), it does not price the job, it does not get the customer's signature, and it does not take the deposit. GlowBid does all of that on one canvas, from $299 a year at the founding price ($499 regular, or $69 a month), and opens to installers on November 1, 2026. If a mockup is all you need, keep Strandr. If you are opening four apps to get from a photo to a signed deposit, read on.

I run a permanent lighting company in Ottawa and I built GlowBid because I was one of those four-app installers. This page is written from that seat. Every Strandr price and feature below was checked on Strandr's own site on September 7, 2026 and is linked at the bottom.

The short comparison

What Strandr does well

Credit where it is due. Strandr is fast. Their home page claims a two-minute average per mockup and I believe it: upload the photo, drag the run along the eave, pick the colours, export. The export is high-resolution with no watermark, which matters when the homeowner forwards it to a spouse. Projects save and reopen, so a colour change on Tuesday does not mean starting over. It runs in a browser on a PC, Mac or tablet with nothing to install.

The price is honest. $197 a year, 7-day trial, 30-day money-back. Strandr's own comparison page prices a single extra closed job against that fee and the math is not hard.

Inchr, the measuring tool, is free and genuinely useful. Set a reference length (their guide uses a standard door at 80 inches), measure the runs, export the numbers. It is the same reference-object method I describe in our measuring guide, and Strandr's guide tells you to add 10 to 15 percent for corners and routing, which is sound advice.

Strandr also has better content than most of the field. Their blog has a comparison page, a measurement guide, contract templates and a marketing series, all updated this month. If you want a visualizer and nothing else, they are a safe choice.

Where the seams are

Strandr is a design tool, and everything that goes wrong for an installer using it goes wrong at the edges of design.

The mockup is not a measurement. Strandr's lights sit on the photo as decoration. The tool has no idea that the run along the eave is 48 feet, so nothing in it can tell you how much track to order or what to charge. Strandr's own integration guide describes the workflow: measure in Inchr, "export your measurements for reference," then "upload the same photo to Strandr" and place the lights. Two uploads, two apps, and the numbers move between them in your head. On a slow Tuesday in September that is fine. On November 14 with nine quotes owed by dinner, it is where the mistakes live.

No quoting. There is no rate card, no per-foot math, no line items. Strandr's pitch is that the mockup closes the job on site, and for some shops it does. But the homeowner still asks "how much," and the answer comes from a spreadsheet or another app.

No CRM, no invoicing. Strandr says this plainly on its own comparison page: "No built-in CRM or invoicing." Follow-ups, deposits and the balance invoice all happen elsewhere.

No payments, no signature. The proposal export is an image and a document, not an agreement the customer signs and funds. A signed mockup is still not a signed job.

LightingElf. Strandr acquired LightingElf in October 2025. Their page says "there is no migration process needed," which is a polite way of saying there is no migration: you sign up and start fresh. If you were a LightingElf shop with a library of designed houses, that library did not come with you. Any tool you move to now is a rebuild, so pick the one that makes the rebuild pay.

Permr. A separate site, permr.io, sells "Close 3x More Permanent Lighting Jobs" with the same under-two-minutes mockup pitch. It shows no pricing and no company name. Whatever it is, it is another login, and permanent lighting already lives inside Strandr, so it is not clear what the split buys an installer.

None of this makes Strandr a bad tool. It makes it a tool that stops at the mockup.

The same house in GlowBid

Take a two-storey with a 112 ft front roofline, two gables and a garage. In GlowBid the address pulls a live Street View preview so you know what you are looking at (we never store or measure that image; Google's terms do not allow it and neither do ours). You upload your own photo of the front, set the scale from the 16 ft double garage door, and draw the runs: roofline, two peaks, two jumps.

That drawing is the measurement. Each run carries a source tag (reference-scaled, in this case) and a confidence level, and any run that angles away from the camera gets a "may be short" warning so you type the real length from a tape or laser. The same drawing is the price. Your rate card says roofline is $25 per foot, peaks are $28, jumps are $12 per foot, and there is a $350 controller:

GlowBid's default rate card also adds a 15 percent peak premium ($151.20 on this house). It is switched off in this example so the numbers stay round; you set it on your own rate card. The $350 controller is an example add-on price; the default card ships with a $250 Wi-Fi controller.

The quote PDF shows the drawing, the footage, that table and a scope block, with the disclaimer that the measurement is photo-based and confirmed on site. The homeowner signs on their phone (the signed document gets a SHA-256 fingerprint so nobody can dispute what was signed), pays the deposit through Stripe, and the balance invoice is ready for install day. Change the drawing and the footage, the bill of materials and the price all change together, because they are one object. That is the whole product.

Pricing, honestly

Strandr is cheaper. $197 against GlowBid Core at $299 a year founding, and $499 a year (or $69 a month) after launch. Pro, which adds the pipeline CRM and automated follow-up texts, is $499 founding and $899 regular, or $119 a month. Ultimate, with the production board and crew app, is $699 founding and $1,299 regular, or $169 a month.

If you keep Strandr and add a quoting tool, a signing tool and a payment link, you will spend more than $299 and you will still be re-typing footage. If a mockup is truly all you need, you will spend less with Strandr and you should.

Moving from Strandr to GlowBid

This takes an afternoon, not a migration project.

1. Keep using your photos. The photos you uploaded to Strandr are yours and they are the only input GlowBid needs. There is no importer for .strandr files and we are not promising one; the drawn runs in Strandr have no footage attached, so there is nothing to import that would save you time. Upload the same photo, draw once.

2. Start with the free tool. glowbid.io/tools/roofline-measure is the GlowBid canvas without the login. Drop a photo, set the reference length, draw the runs, see the footage and the lights. It is the same engine, so if the free tool feels right the product will too.

3. Set up your rate card in 15 minutes. GlowBid asks for per-foot rates by run type (roofline, ridge line, peak, jump, ground, tree) and by product line (track, no-track, C9 seasonal), then your premiums (peaks, storeys, rush), flat per-jump and per-peak charges, add-ons (controllers, transformers, wreaths, garland, timers), minimum job and discounts. If you already have these numbers in a spreadsheet, it is a copy job. If you do not, start from the run table in our measuring guide and price each run type on its own.

4. Run both for a week. Quote your next few houses in both tools. Where the Strandr mockup looks better, tell us; that is the bar. Where GlowBid saved you the re-typing, you will know.

5. Cancel when you are sure. Strandr's money-back window is 30 days and so is ours. Nobody needs to lose money finding out.

Who should stay on Strandr

Shops that sell on the mockup alone and already have quoting, signing and payments they like. Shops that need the widest colour and decoration palette right now; Strandr has had a year to build theirs and we are new. Anyone who wants the cheapest possible visualizer. Strandr is a good tool for those installers, and I would rather say so than have you find out after a switch.

For everyone else, the question is whether you want the drawing, the footage and the price to be the same thing. GlowBid is the only tool where they are.
