Seasonal Christmas light installation in Vancouver runs $8.50 to $12 CAD per linear foot on the North Shore at Forever Party Rentals, lights, takedown and storage included, and $3 to $8 a foot of roofline across the Lower Mainland at Shine City, whose average first year is $650 to $1,200. Permanent systems start at $2,000 a front at Vancouver Glow. Add 5 percent GST, and 7 percent PST where it applies to your billing.

I install permanent lighting in Ottawa, where the problem is minus 25. Vancouver's problem is 175 mm of rain in November, and the published prices show a market built around it: later installs, wind-rated hardware on the mountain side, and a real gap between the North Shore and the flat.

What do Vancouver installers charge for seasonal lights per foot?#

Two published per-foot rates, and the gap between them is the North Shore. Forever Party Rentals charges $8.50 to $12 a linear foot in North Vancouver with the strands, a WCB-covered crew, season-long maintenance, takedown and storage in the number, and says the price reflects steep pitches, elevation-driven afternoon weather and hardware rated for gust load on mountain-adjacent houses. A steep-roof install runs 5 to 7 hours, takedown 3 to 4. Year two is 15 to 25 percent lower.

Shine City in Surrey prices the flat: $3 to $8 a foot of roofline, an average Lower Mainland house at $650 to $1,200 in year one, returning customers 30 to 50 percent less, and a per-light-type table with C9 LED at $1.50 to $3 a foot installed. Shack Shine West Vancouver starts at $1,100 with the lights bought, then 45 to 55 percent, the same national figure it uses in Toronto and Edmonton.

For an installer the lesson is in the year-two column. Three companies, three re-install discounts: 15 to 25 percent off, 30 to 50 percent off, 45 to 55 percent of year one. All three are defensible because they include different things in year one. Write yours on the year-one quote; the rebook and re-install pricing page works the math on each.

What do permanent lights cost in Vancouver?#

By the house, not the foot, on the pages that publish. Vancouver Glow's May 2026 guide puts a front-only system at $2,000 to $5,000 and a full home at $5,000 to $10,000 or more, says the quote should list the lights, track, wiring, controller, power supplies, labour, app setup and warranty, and notes that a summer install usually costs less than one in November or December. Shine City brackets permanent at $15 to $30 a foot as a one-time install. Vancouver Permanent Lighting, a Trimlight dealer, has a per-foot answer in a FAQ that did not open for us, so no number from it is used here.

For the BC per-foot picture you have to leave the city: Light Right in Victoria says most jobs land at $25 to $40 all in, and the national spread from Calgary's $15 to Ottawa's $41 is on the permanent cost in Canada page. On a 170 ft front, Vancouver Glow's $2,000 to $5,000 is $11.76 to $29.41 a foot, which brackets everyone else. Build yours from the permanent per-foot guide and the drawing rather than from a range that wide.

When is the Vancouver season?#

Later than anywhere else in Canada, and set by rain rather than frost. Vancouver's average first fall frost is November 30 on ECCC's 1991 to 2020 normals; November averages 9 and 3, December 6 and 1. Forever Party Rentals installs mid-October through early December and books from August to early October, with mountain-side houses booking first; Shine City runs late October to mid-December with lights on around the first week of December, most installers fully booked by December, and takedown in January.

The limit is water. Climates to Travel puts November at 175 mm of rain over 17 days, December at 172 mm over 17, January at 174 mm over 18, and the year at 1,160 mm. That is a wet roof on more days than a dry one for the whole season, and Forever Party Rentals notes light snow can start in November or early December on the North Shore. Takedown in January is a January of 18 wet days; write it as a window with a weather clause.

What do rain, moss and wind do to the price?#

They change what you buy and how long you stand on the ladder:

  • IP rating. Both permanent pages on this list sell IP68 components, and Vancouver Glow says to judge a system by "how it performs after years of Vancouver rain". Clips, plugs and controllers that are fine in Calgary's dry cold sit in water here. A no-track seasonal line and a track permanent line with the rating written on the quote lets the customer see what the extra per foot buys.
  • Wet and mossy shingles. North-facing pitches on the Shore hold moss and a film of water from October on. Fall protection is not optional, and a wet roof takes longer; Forever Party Rentals' 5 to 7 hours for a steep install is the honest number. A storey and pitch premium on the upper runs is where that time goes.
  • Wind on the mountain side. Forever Party Rentals rates the install for gust load before quoting. Clip every socket and use wind-rated hardware above the tree line; price the mid-season fix into seasonal work, or charge for the visit.
  • A later rush. With lights on by early December, the last two weeks of November are the crunch. GlowBid's default rush premium is 20 percent; whatever yours is, put it on bookings after mid-November.
  • Scrap in the rain. A 10 percent materials buffer, shown on the quote as the installer's choice, covers wet cuts and dropped clips.

A worked example: a 170 ft two-storey on the North Shore#

The two-storey from our pricing guides, front elevation only, measured from the homeowner's photo with the 16 ft garage door as the reference: 122 ft of roofline, 48 ft of peaks across four runs, three jumps totalling 16 ft, 170 lit feet. Priced seasonal, lights included, at the $10.25 midpoint of Forever Party Rentals' North Vancouver range, with both taxes.

Same house on Shine City's $3 to $8, before tax $510.00 to $1,360.00 $368.50 to $982.66

The Shine City line brackets its own $650 to $1,200 first-year average, so 170 ft is a fair count for the average house on the flat, and the North Shore premium on the same footage is about $800 a season. Run the same drawing through GlowBid's default C9 seasonal card with nothing changed, $8 a foot on roofline, $9 on peaks, $4 on jumps, a 15 percent pitch premium on the peaks, 10 percent on the second-storey runs and a $45 timer, and it prices at $1,684.20 before tax, $1,639.20 of runs plus the timer, with a $505.26 deposit. That lands between Shine City's top and the North Shore midpoint, which is about where a Lower Mainland card should sit before you add a pitch premium for the Shore. The seasonal per-foot guide shows that build line by line. Draw your own house in the free roofline tool and the footage is there in two minutes; it is an estimate confirmed on site, and the quote says so.

Setting a Vancouver rate card#

  1. Tax: GST 5 and PST 7 as two lines. The CRA and the BC PST page. Ask your accountant once whether the labour line carries PST as well as the strands; GlowBid's rate card holds one tax percent and one label, so set it to the combined figure that applies to your billing, label it GST and PST, and note the split in the scope block.
  2. A North Shore rate and a flat rate. Or one rate with a pitch and storey premium that gets you from $6 to $11 on the same strand. The published market already has both numbers.
  3. Year-two price on the year-one quote. 15, 25, 30, 50 percent; pick one and write it down.
  4. Wind-rated hardware as a line. Above the tree line it is not an upgrade, it is the job.
  5. Rush after mid-November. The season ends the first week of December here.

GlowBid bills in US dollars at launch; the rate card holds whatever CAD numbers you type. Founding pricing is on the pricing page.

Mistakes to avoid on Vancouver quotes#

  • Pricing a Deep Cove roof from a Surrey rate. The published gap is $3 to $8 against $8.50 to $12 on the same strand. Pitch and storey premiums, or you eat the extra three hours.
  • Dry-climate clips in a wet one. A plug that sits in water for 17 days a month is a service call in December. Rated hardware, and the rating on the quote.
  • "Takedown in January." Eighteen wet days. Window plus weather clause.
  • Quoting from a summer photo. The tree grew, the moss came back, the gutter guards went on. Confirm on site.
  • Leaving PST off the deposit. Two taxes, both on the deposit and the balance, or the invoice does not match the quote.
  • Booking installs into December. Shine City says most installers are fully booked by December and Forever Party Rentals stops in early December for a reason. Fill October, price late November as rush.

FAQ

Questions installers ask

How much does Christmas light installation cost per foot in Vancouver?

$8.50 to $12 CAD per linear foot in North Vancouver at Forever Party Rentals, with strands, install, in-season fixes, takedown and storage in the price, and $3 to $8 a foot of roofline across Metro Vancouver at Shine City, whose average first-year house is $650 to $1,200. That is $6.14 to $8.67 USD and $2.17 to $5.78 USD at the Bank of Canada's September 4, 2026 rate. Add 5 percent GST and 7 percent PST.

How much do permanent Christmas lights cost in Vancouver?

$2,000 to $5,000 CAD for a front-only system and $5,000 to $10,000 or more for the whole house at Vancouver Glow, in a May 2026 guide, with the track, wiring, controller, power supplies, labour and app setup in the quote. Shine City brackets permanent at $15 to $30 a foot as a one-time install. Nobody in Vancouver publishes a verified per-foot rate for permanent, so price it from your own rate card and the drawing.

Is PST charged on Christmas light installation in BC?

GST is 5 percent everywhere in Canada, and BC's PST is 7 percent on goods and on many services, per the province's PST page. Whether your labour line carries PST as well as the strands depends on how the job is billed, and that is a question for your accountant once, in September. Quote before tax, show GST and PST as their own lines, and put both on the deposit.

When is the Christmas light season in Vancouver?

Mid-October to early December for installs at Forever Party Rentals, late October to mid-December at Shine City, with lights on by the first week of December and takedown in January. Vancouver's average first frost is November 30 on ECCC's 1991 to 2020 normals, the latest in the country, so cold is not the limit; November's 175 mm of rain over 17 days is. Book September to early October.

Why is North Vancouver more expensive than Surrey?

Steep roofs, elevation and wind. Forever Party Rentals says its $8.50 to $12 a foot reflects North Shore pitches, mountain-side weather and hardware rated for gust load, with a steep-roof install taking 5 to 7 hours and takedown 3 to 4. Shine City's $3 to $8 is an average Lower Mainland house on the flat. Same strand, a different day on the ladder, and the per-foot rate has to carry the difference.

Can I quote a Vancouver house from a photo?

Yes, as an estimate confirmed on site. On the North Shore, take the photo on a dry day, set the scale from the garage door, and draw the roofline, peaks and jumps; pitch is what turns $3 a foot into $12 here. Photo measurements are estimates; runs angled away from the camera read short, and every GlowBid measurement carries a source and confidence label. The site check is also when you decide whether a wet roof gets a ladder.
