Christmas light installation in Halifax is sold as a seasonal package, and the published prices start at $649 CAD at WashCrafters and $700 at 360 Home Glow. WashCrafters says most Halifax homes land at $900 to $1,800 for the first season; 360 Home Glow installs most displays for $1,000 to $1,500. Lights, takedown and storage are in both. Add 14 percent HST.

I run a permanent lighting company in Ottawa. Halifax is a metro of 465,703 people on the 2021 census, and when we wrote our Canada pricing page in September, I could not find one Halifax installer who printed a number. Two publish one today. This page is what they publish, what is inside it, and what a rate card needs in a wet, windy coastal city.

What does seasonal installation cost in Halifax?#

$649 to $700 to start, $900 to $1,800 for most homes, by the house, with the lights in the price. Both published companies sell the whole season. WashCrafters calls it "one flat price" and says the number comes from the linear footage lit and how much of the property is lit. It keeps ownership of the lights, clips and timer, stores them labelled between seasons, and discounts re-installs for returning customers without saying by how much. It also takes a deposit to hold the install week and credits it to the final invoice.

360 Home Glow quotes on linear footage, where the lights go, access and complexity, and says about half its estimates are done by phone. It keeps the commercial-grade LEDs as well and stores them in a heated facility. Its early-booking discount is 20 percent for first-time customers who book before September, so the Halifax booking season starts in summer.

So a Halifax homeowner is not buying lights. They are renting a season. Your quote has to show the same things or it reads as labour against their whole package: strands, clips, timer, service calls, takedown, storage. Our per-foot pricing guide builds those into the rates from scratch.

What about permanent lights in Halifax?#

No Halifax company prints a per-foot permanent price. 360 Home Glow's permanent lighting page carries a $700 minimum job and a $1,000 to $1,500 typical home, the same figures as its seasonal page, so I would not read them as a permanent track price until the company confirms it. Gemstone Lights lists three Nova Scotia dealers and estimates about $4.34 a month in Nova Scotia power at six hours a day, with no install price. For published permanent ranges from other provinces, see the permanent lights cost in Canada page.

That gap is the opening. A Halifax installer who publishes a permanent per-foot rate with the controller line shown separately has the only number on the page when a homeowner searches.

When is the Halifax season?#

Late October to early December for installs, January for takedown, on WashCrafters' published calendar, with takedown sometimes running into early February. 360 Home Glow covers free service visits to December 23.

  1. Oct 31WashCrafters early-bird deadline

  3. Nov 11Average first fall snowfall
  4. Early DecInstall season closes
  5. Dec 23360 Home Glow free service visits end
  6. Jan to early FebTakedown, weather permitting

The Environment Canada 1991 to 2020 normals at Halifax Stanfield set the edges. The average first fall snowfall is November 11. November brings 19.4 cm of snow and 145.4 mm of rain, the wettest month of the year, with an average low of 0.0 degrees. December jumps to 44.1 cm of snow with a minus 5.8 low, and January brings 53.9 cm and a minus 10.1 low, 215.2 cm a year.

Halifax is not Winnipeg cold. It is wet, and it sits on zero. December averages 10.6 days that never climb above freezing and January 18.0, so a roof can be rain on Monday and ice on Tuesday. Fill late October and early November first, and book takedown as a January window that can slide into February, the way WashCrafters already does.

What do wind, rain and salt air do to the price?#

They set the premiums and the hardware. Halifax Stanfield averages 17.9 km/h of wind in November and 18.7 in December, with 1.1 days of gusts at 90 km/h or more in December and 3.3 a year.

  • Clip every socket. A strand that flaps in a 90 km/h gust is a service call on December 20. Price the service call into the season, as both Halifax packages do, or sell it as a line: our service call pricing page sets one.
  • Wet plugs fail first. November's 145 mm of rain finds every connection that sits in a gutter. Keep plugs off the roof surface and in drip loops, and test every strand on the ground before it goes up.
  • Salt air near the water. On the harbour and the coast, treat clips and timer contacts as wear parts. Carry spares on the truck, carry a 10 percent materials buffer shown as the installer's choice, and replace corroded clips at takedown, not at install.
  • December is rush. With installs closing in early December and 44 cm of snow on the way, a December 10 booking is an icy roof. GlowBid's default rush premium is 20 percent on the runs.

A worked example: a 116 ft bungalow on GlowBid's default rate card#

An example house, not a customer job: a one-storey bungalow with an attached garage, front elevation only, measured from the homeowner's photo with a tape measurement of the garage door as the reference. 92 ft of roofline, two 12 ft peak runs over the entry and garage, two jumps totalling 8 ft. C9 seasonal, lights included, priced on GlowBid's default rate card with its numbers typed in as Canadian dollars: $8 a foot roofline, $9 peaks, $4 jumps, a 15 percent peak premium, a $45 timer, the default $1,500 minimum job, and HST at 14 percent.

WashCrafters' band for most Halifax homes, before tax $900 to $1,800 $641.12 to $1,282.23

The runs come to $1,061.40 before tax, $9.15 per lit foot, which sits inside the Halifax band. The default $1,500 minimum does not. It adds $438.60 to a small house and pushes it to $12.93 per lit foot, with a $649 package down the street. A default minimum does not travel. Set a Halifax minimum near the local starting prices and the same bungalow is $1,210.00 with HST, and the drawing still carries every foot. Draw your own house in the free roofline tool; the footage is an estimate confirmed on site, and the quote says so.

Booked as rush in December, the runs go up 20 percent to $1,219.68 plus the timer. With the $900 minimum that is $1,441.74 with HST. With the $1,500 minimum the rush disappears into the top-up, which is one more reason not to leave the default in place.

Setting a Halifax rate card#

  1. Tax: 14, labelled HST. Nova Scotia's rate per the Canada Revenue Agency, down from 15 on April 1, 2025. Quotes saved before that date with 15 on them are wrong; check old templates. Our GST and HST on lighting quotes page covers registration and the deposit.
  2. A seasonal package line with the lights in it. Both Halifax companies own the strands. Price the rental with replacement strands, service calls and storage in it.
  3. Re-install as its own product. WashCrafters discounts returning customers. GlowBid's default seasonal-service line, for lights the customer already owns, starts at $3 a foot of roofline; our re-book and re-install page prices year two.
  4. Rush from December 1.
  5. A minimum that fits the city. $649 and $700 are the published starts. Set yours for the drive to Fall River or Tantallon in January, not for an Ottawa bungalow.

GlowBid bills in US dollars at launch; the rate card holds whatever CAD numbers you type, and the tax line is one percent and one label. A 7-day trial with no card and a 30-day money-back on a first yearly payment are on the pricing page.

Mistakes to avoid on Halifax quotes#

  • Quoting labour against a package. Halifax packages include strands, clips, timer, service calls, takedown and storage. List every one, or the customer compares your labour to their whole season.
  • Leaving 15 percent HST on an old template. It has been 14 since April 1, 2025.
  • Promising a January takedown date. Takedown here can run into February. Window plus weather clause.
  • Booking December at October rates. 44 cm of December snow and a roof sitting at zero. Charge rush.
  • Pricing a small house up to an Ottawa minimum. The bungalow above shows what $1,500 does against a $649 start.
  • Skipping the service call in a wind city. One gust day in December is a ladder trip; price it in or put it on the agreement.
  • Trusting a photo measurement on a run that angles away from the camera. It reads short; type the tape length on the site visit.

FAQ

Questions installers ask

How much does Christmas light installation cost in Halifax?

WashCrafters starts at $649 CAD a season and says most Halifax homes land between $900 and $1,800 the first season, lights, service calls, takedown and storage included. 360 Home Glow starts at $700 and installs most displays for $1,000 to $1,500. That is $462.32 to $1,282.23 USD at the Bank of Canada's October 27, 2026 rate. Add 14 percent HST.

What is the HST on Christmas light installation in Nova Scotia?

14 percent. Nova Scotia's HST dropped from 15 to 14 percent on April 1, 2025, per the Canada Revenue Agency's rate page. HST is one tax on the whole supply, so the lights, labour, takedown and storage on a seasonal package all carry it once you are registered. Put 14 on the rate card, label it HST, and charge it on the deposit as well as the balance.

When do Halifax installers hang and take down Christmas lights?

WashCrafters installs from late October through early December and takes down in January, weather permitting, sometimes into early February. Its early-bird discount runs to October 31. Environment Canada's 1991 to 2020 normals put Halifax's average first fall snowfall at November 11, so the first half of November is the safe install window and takedown needs a window, not a date.

Do Halifax installers charge per foot?

Not on any Halifax page I checked on October 28, 2026. WashCrafters says its price is set by the linear footage lit and how much of the property is lit, then publishes a flat seasonal price from $649. 360 Home Glow lists linear footage, placement, access and complexity as its pricing factors. Build your own per-foot card, then check the total against the $900 to $1,800 local band.

Does Halifax wind and salt air change how you price a job?

Yes. Halifax Stanfield averages 17.9 km/h of wind in November and 1.1 days with gusts of 90 km/h or more in December alone on the 1991 to 2020 normals. Clip every socket, keep connections off the roof surface, and price the mid-season service call into the season, the way both published Halifax packages do. Spray and wind find the weak clip first.

Can I quote a Halifax house from a photo?

Yes, as an estimate confirmed on site. Set the scale from a garage door or a tape measurement, draw the roofline, peaks and jumps, and the footage and price come from that one drawing. Photo measurements are estimates; runs angled away from the camera read short and get a warning, and every GlowBid measurement carries a source and confidence label. Walk the house before the lights go up.
